Over the last few years the regulatory community has moved to loosen restrictions on site redevelopment. This has come with the recognition that sometimes contaminated sites are NOT unhealthy for people and the environment if they are handled properly. Proper handling could involve engineering around the environmental contamination or restricting future development to certain activities (e.g. commercial or industrial development vs. residential development).
